Q: How does coaching differ from therapy or consulting?

A: Professional coaching focuses on setting goals, working towards greater fulfillment, and making and managing personal change. It is present and future oriented and taps into what things you most value and want to honor in your life.  Sometimes it’s helpful to understand coaching by distinguishing it from other personal or organizational support professions. The emphases are on action, accountability, and follow through. The assumption in coaching is that individuals or teams are capable of generating their own solutions with the coach providing thoughtful questioning and framework.

Therapy often focuses on your past history up to your present, resolving difficulties and dysfunction and conflict from the past that hamper emotional functioning in the present.

Consultants are retained for their expertise and are often hired to diagnose problems and prescribe and sometimes implement solutions.

Q: What are some reasons that a person or team might work with a coach?

A: Working with a coach would be helpful if you are experiencing any or some combination of the following:

  • There is an urgent or compelling challenge or opportunity at stake

  • A gap exists in knowledge, skills, confidence, or resources

  • There is a desire to accelerate results or a lack of clarity with choices to be made

  • Success has started to become problematic

  • Work and life are out of balance, creating unwanted consequences

  • Core strengths need to be identified, along with how best to leverage them.

  • Retirement is coming into view (1-15 years away) and there is no clarity about what that life might look like.

Q: What does a coaching relationship look like?

A: You will learn more about this in our half-hour complimentary coaching strategy session, where we’ll establish whether we have good coaching chemistry and that you are ready for the active partnership of a coaching relationship. Should we move forward with a coaching package, we will start out with a Discovery Session that allows us to get to know each other better and allows us to design our coaching partnership. As your coach, I bring no personal agenda or judgment and will create a safe space for you to think things through, dare to dream, or perhaps articulate for the first time. I will ask questions, listen, and sometimes challenge you so that you are reminded of your full potential and aren't settling for less in your life. My role is to support you, in service to what you are wanting for yourself — even if at first you are not certain what that is. We can uncover it together.
